Today, four manufacturers [Goliath] own 93% of the US $11 Billion North American market. Since 2007 the “Box” stores have dominated retail by absorbing just over 50% by volume sales in a little over 10 years. With the prevailing marketing strategy of “Paint and Primer in one can” products, paint manufacturers have convinced customers to pay more for a gallon of paint without actually delivering any real technology advancement.

In simply reading the technical data sheets with the carefully crafted marketing material and then using these products, customers have learned that they deliver what paint has always required – multiple coats on both painted and unpainted surfaces. This exercise did yield an fortuitous opportunity of convincing customers that fewer coats just makes sense.
