towards reducing downtime and maintenance costs in the manufacturing
sector.
Virtually every modern manufacturing facility contains machines that use
sensors. The effective and efficient operation of these machines and the
entire manufacturing facility depend on the proper functioning of the
multitude of sensors used. A typical manufacturing facility could
contain 800-1200 sensors. Of these, it is estimated 40% are susceptible
to breakage. Sensor failure requires shut down of the machine and
related manufacturing process in order to replace the damaged sensor.
However, the real cost incurred far exceeds the actual cost of the
damaged sensor and also includes the much greater cost of related down
time and the maintenance costs to replace sensors and recalibrate the
machines.
